  13.        3.1  _J_F_I_F__a_n_d__G_I_F__f_i_l_e__s_u_p_p_o_r_t_:__n_e_w__s_u_p_p_o_r_t_e_d__f_i_l_e__f_o_r_m_a_t_s

  15.        The ImageVision Tools now support reading and writing the
  16.        JPEG compressed file format JFIF, as well as reading and
  17.        writing the GIF file format.

  19.        3.2  _I_m_a_g_e__V_i_e_w__G_I_F__a_n_d__J_F_I_F__f_i_l_e__s_u_p_p_o_r_t

  21.        Image View can now write images using GIF and JFIF (JPEG-
  22.        compressed) file formats.  To choose GIF or JFIF file
  23.        output, choose Save As...  and select the desired file
  24.        format from the buttons in the file browser.

  26.        Image View writes GIF and JFIF images using presets which
  27.        are suitable for many uses.  For better control over GIF and
  28.        JFIF output quality, use Image Works to convert images to
  29.        these formats.

  31.        3.3  _I_m_a_g_e__W_o_r_k_s__J_F_I_F__f_i_l_e__s_u_p_p_o_r_t

  33.        Image Works allows you to choose compression quality when
  34.        you write an image to the JFIF file format.  To do this,
  35.        choose Save As... and select JFIF output from the menu in
  36.        the file browser.  Then adjust the quality slider to the
  37.        desired setting.

  39.        To preview the effects of the image quality setting in
  40.        advance, use the compview(1) utility.

  44.        Image Works now allows you to control several options when
  45.        you write an image to the GIF file format.  These options
  46.        help you prepare images for World Wide Web documents or
  47.        other means of on-line distribution.  To change these
  48.        options, choose "Set GIF Options..." from the File menu or
  49.        the Save As... file browser.

  51.        "Number of Colors to Save" allows you to choose the maximum
  52.        number of colors to use in the color palette of the GIF
  53.        image.  You can choose 16, 64, 128, or 256 colors.  By
  54.        default, Image Works uses 64 colors.

  56.        More colors will give you a better quality image.  You may
  57.        want to choose many colors to accurately represent
  58.        photographs or other highly realistic imagery.

  74.        Fewer colors will help save disk space and network
  75.        transmission time.  Use this option for diagrams, line
  76.        drawings, graphics composed of spot colors, and other simple
  77.        graphics.

  79.        Finally, if you prepare images for the World Wide Web,
  80.        remember that your content is viewable by a worldwide
  81.        audience.  Internet users will view your images using a wide
  82.        range of computer systems and software, with varying color
  83.        graphics capabilities.  To place fewer demands on the
  84.        viewer's web browsing hardware and software, you should
  85.        choose the fewest colors to provide acceptable quality for
  86.        your images.  If you place several images into one page, use
  87.        fewer colors in each image to help web browsers faithfully
  88.        show all the images.

  90.        "Use Dithering" allows you to control how Image Works
  91.        reduces the number of colors in an image. Dithering is a
  92.        process which changes the pixels in an image to simulate
  93.        lost colors. By default, Image Works uses dithering, but for
  94.        some types of images (such as screen snapshots, line art,
  95.        and simple graphics) you may get better results by
  96.        unchecking this option.

  98.        "Use Interlacing" allows you to control the way Image Works
  99.        arranges image data in a GIF file. Interlaced images allow
  100.        World Wide Web browsers to quickly show a rough version of
  101.        the full image, then progressively refine visual detail as
  102.        they read more image data. By default, Image Works uses
  103.        interlacing when writing GIF images.  You can uncheck this
  104.        option if you want smaller GIF files that do not allow
  105.        progressive display.

  107.        "Choose Transparency Color" allows you to make a solid color
  108.        of your image transparent.  This allows you to create Web
  109.        images with nonrectangular graphics.

  111.        To choose the transparency color, click the "Choose
  112.        Transparency Color" button, move the pointer over the pixel
  113.        in the image which contains the color you want to make
  114.        transparent, then click with the left mouse button.  Image
  115.        Works immediately previews the effects of the selection.  To
  116.        remove all transparency, click the Clear button in the GIF
  117.        Transparency panel.
